Numismatics

          Juan Riera will give an introduction to the different types of coin collecting, important aspects to look at when coin collecting, the relationship between coin collecting and money/the economy, and why and how numismatics is important to archaeology. He will bring in coins for everyone to look at as well as books, pamphlets, and brochures. A heavy focus will be on the numismatics of Imperial Spain as examples and of the world wide effects. By the way, there will be no free samples of gold or silver coins.

          Juan Riera's B.A. is from the University of Florida in History and Geography and his M.A. from Florida International University in History. Riera's Doctoral course work is from Texas Tech University in History with minors in Museum Studies and Anthropology/Archaeology.

          Juan's University teaching expsrience includes over five years at Florida International University, Texas Tech University, Wayland Baptist University, Jose Maria "'vargas University, and Florida State University. His mus~um work (5+ years) has been at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, Mystic Seaport Museum, Museum of Florida History, and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

          Riera's archaeological experience, about 6 years, include Lubbock Lake Landmark, Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research, and a dig at the Martin/de Soto site. Other experiences include Texas Park Service, Florida Park Service, and National Park Service.

Underwater Archaeology in Florida: New Discoveries

          This presentation will provide an Archaeological overview of submerged cultural resources from prehistoric times through the historic Maritime era in Florida. It will provide examples of specific sites, their importance to local history, and their relation to economic prosperity both in the past and present.

          Learning about Underwater Archaeology and History of the region is an important way to maintain cultural vitality of Florida. Cutting edge and current research in this region of Florida will also be presented.

          Matthew Defelice is the Archaeologist for Broward County, a marine archaeologist and is a scientific diver. His degree is from East Carolina University. While there he was a field Archaeologist participating in many projects. One field school, 2004, in Alpena, Michigan focused on mapping a submerged Great Lakes Bulk freighter, the Monohansett, located in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve.-More than one hundred vessels are contained in the sanctuary. DeFelice is also on the staff of the Broward County Historical Commission.
